Along with his premedical and medical studies, Marc Ruel earned a Masters in Piano Performance from the Conservatoires de Musique du Quebec, under Monique Collet, and received the highest performer distinction granted by this institution. He also received national and international awards prior to selecting medicine over music, and still performs in concerts regularly. He was guest recitalist at the prestigious Festival International de Musique de Montpellier in 1996 and has recorded for Radio-Canada and Radio-France. His repertoire includes major works by Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel and others. Marc Ruel joined the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as a cardiac surgeon in 2002, after completing fellowship training and graduating from Harvard University. In addition to his surgical and clinical commitments, he is devoted to his research laboratory, where new biosurgical approaches to myocardial revascularization are being developed.
